An independent WaikikiMedia project · Exploring 3D-printed housing for Hawaiʻi
Housing + Maui

Could this help where housing is hardest?

Technology should never be used to turn displacement into a sales pitch. The useful question is narrower: are there circumstances where faster, repeatable construction could responsibly add to Hawaiʻi’s housing toolkit?

Recovery continues

Maui is still rebuilding homes and lives.

The County of Maui reports that FEMA provided temporary housing to 1,281 families displaced by the 2023 wildfires. As of July 2026, more than half had transitioned to permanent homes, while temporary-housing assistance was extended through February 28, 2027.

Real projects, real scale

Recovery housing is already a major construction program.

Front Street

County recovery materials describe 240 new multifamily units planned to replace housing lost in the fires, including affordable and workforce housing.

Lahaina Surf

112 multifamily affordable units are planned for reconstruction after the original housing was destroyed.

Broader program

The County lists multiple affordable-rental reconstruction projects across Lahaina, alongside infrastructure and mitigation work.

Where could 3D printing fit?

Potential value would have to be demonstrated—not assumed. Candidate advantages worth testing include repeatable wall systems, reduced wall-system labor, rapid robotic production and resilient concrete construction.

But Maui adds constraints: community priorities, land, infrastructure, wildfire resilience, water, insurance, skilled trades, permitting, financing, cultural context and the need to avoid imposing mainland assumptions on Lahaina.

The test: does the technology make a specific project safer, faster, more affordable or more resilient after all Hawaiʻi costs and requirements are included?
No predetermined conclusion

It may fit some projects and not others.

The purpose of this project is to ask the question early enough—and seriously enough—that builders, engineers, housing organizations and communities can answer it with evidence.
